Air Force shuts out Texas Tech in D1A cross-conference battle

The Air Force Academy's second game of the season was played against a hard-hitting Texas Tech program from the Red River D1A Conference.  The Red Raiders of Texas Tech expanded their travel season this year to include match-ups against two different Rocky Mountain Rugby D1A programs, Air Force and Wyoming.

Air Force performed well defensively earning the shut-out and a 94-0 scoreline but still had some ball handling errors that could have led to several more tries on the day.  Only three and a half weeks into the season, we will look to tidy those up as we head to play another non-conference D1A battle with the University of Michigan of the Big Ten Universities D1A conference in Ann Arbor this Friday night.

AFA had two hat-tricks on the day.  Senior winger, Colin "Condor" Culver found open space on the outside and had several great line breaks as well as some solid defensive tackles. AFA's captain and junior lock, Elliot Higgins earned a hat-trick with extrememly tough play in the trenches.  Elliott also had several poaches defensively styming Texas Tech several times. Senior lock, Austin Lyons also had a hat-trick making several line breaks in loose play.  He was also stellar, as usual, in the lineouts spoiling Texas Tech.  Fitness leader and Senior 8-man, Jason Kyles, was superb off the scrum and in loose play taking on another two tries on the season.

Junior Flyhalf, Eric Menser, put in an early try and went 11 for 12 on conversions on the day for 27 points.  Other players scoring tries on the day were, Michael Mechikoff, Tristyn Hanson, and Nick Waterman. Senior Fullback, Casey Rothstein had a conversion late and was superb on defense with two try saving tackles after Texas Tech line breaks.

The forwards were again dominant in the scrum, the lineout and during loose play. Cadet-in-Charge and prop, McChord Thorley, had an awesome burst down the touchline after a kickoff finishing with a perfectly timed offload to Austin Lyons for a try at the start of the second half.

Texas Tech fought hard to the end but the speed of play from Air Force was too much for the Red Raiders.  Air Forces wishes Texas Tech a successful and safe rest of the season and hopes they perform well in the Red River Conference.
